Not long after I came to live in Appin, I met Ian 'Tubby' Ross. Tubby was well known in the area and beyond for his craft work, particularly in making walking sticks and cutlery using antlers from red and roe deer, and rams horn. He inspired me to have a go. Sadly, my old friend passed away a couple of years ago. I hope I have learned enough from him to continue his fine work.
I use 'cast' antlers from red and roe deer, in preference to antlers from culled deer. The antlers are cast in late spring each year. I source them locally where possible, but demand means sometimes I have to look further afield. The front and end caps are crafted from European or Indian water buffalo horn.
The blades I use are drop forged, finest Sheffield Steel.
